Marianne,

Warm in blankets,

A six-year old in a shroud,

Says Mamma,

What shape will I take underground?

Why was I born to be planted

To be buried without a sound?

What will I grow into

From this new tummy

Far, far down?

 

And mother says,

Hush now

Quiet now

Good night

Sleep tight

Pull the ground around you,

Safe and snug

All life long.

 

 

What were we,

What would you have been

Up there

In 1964?
